Are you bothered by the attitudes and behavior of some of the women at your events?<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Is gossip a problem for the women in your group?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would a guest feel welcome if they attended one of your women\u2019s ministry events?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re struggling with women who are less than welcoming, sadly you are not alone.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A leader recently reading through the women\u2019s ministry survey results<\/a> commented that she couldn\u2019t help but notice that \u201ca large reason women don\u2019t engage in women\u2019s ministry is how those in attendance treat them and how they behave (not being friendly, gossiping, being judgmental).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She admitted that she had seen firsthand the destruction that can be caused<\/strong> by that type of behavior. Haven\u2019t we all?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She wanted to know how leaders can fix this issue of women behaving badly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What a great and challenging question!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While we certainly can\u2019t control how every woman behaves and speaks, we can set expectations, model appropriate behavior, and create an atmosphere that is welcoming.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are 10 ideas for creating a more welcoming women\u2019s ministry:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n
1. Start with your women\u2019s ministry team.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Train your team how to love <\/strong>on women as they come through the door.<\/strong> Train them to make purposeful introductions<\/strong> and how to engage women<\/strong> they see sitting on the sidelines. Help them to be aware of times they slip into holy huddles and cliques. Consider role-playing different situations so they can practice. Your team must model what they expect from those in attendance.<\/strong> Incorporate these expectations into your team documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Select Bible studies and event themes that focus on biblical hospitality.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Check out Just Open the Door<\/a>, The Turquoise Table<\/a>, and The Simplest Way to Change the World<\/a>. Use scripture to convict and transform their hearts.<\/strong> You could also select themes or studies about the power of words, gossip, being a friend (see Craving Connection<\/a>), or any other issue that create discord at your events and activities<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Incorporate intentional icebreakers.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Skip the silly minute-to-win-it games and choose games that highlight shared experiences and personal preferences<\/strong>. Consider games that require women to circulate around the room and talk with others. Break up those cliques (SHARE Bingo<\/a>, Things I Love<\/a>, Meet Your Match<\/a>). If your icebreaker is appropriate for small groups at tables (A Day in the Life<\/a>, My Few of My Favorite Things<\/a>, Roll and Poll<\/a>), then you can still mix up your group up by having 3 people from every table get up and move one table over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Prayerfully assign seating.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I know you may initially meet some resistance, but if you stand firm and explain why<\/strong> most of your women will adapt and benefit. They do this at my church for almost every women\u2019s ministry event. It\u2019s expected and our women actually enjoy it. You\u2019ll need to require registrations in advance. You can divide women the way I explain in this post<\/a> or you can be intentional and group women by their area of town or by similar seasons in life. Just be sure you mix in your new\/newer women with those who\u2019ve been at the church for a long time. Assigned seating is a great way to ensure women from multiple generations interact with each other.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Create opportunities for your women to pray together one-on-one.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s much more difficult to be catty with someone you\u2019ve prayed for and who has prayed over you. Prayer softens hearts and opens the door for deeper relationships.<\/strong> Prayer creates an intimacy that stretches beyond that moment. You\u2019ll find several tips for setting up prayer partners in this post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Design guided discussion groups.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Combine with #5 and #7. Be intentional with your discussion groups and give them a list of questions<\/strong>. Guided discussions help keep women focused on the task at hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Establish discussion group or small group guidelines\/covenants.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Discussion group guidelines create a safe space where women can share without fear of gossip or judgment<\/strong>. I suggest reading your guidelines out loud to the group. If your group will meet repeatedly, over a retreat weekend or as a weekly Bible study, have the group sign and return the guidelines and then hold women accountable<\/strong> if they struggle or fail to hold them. You\u2019ll find some examples here<\/a> and here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Provide leadership training for all of your volunteers.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t assume women know how be welcoming. Teach them what that looks like in your church. Clearly communicate, verbally and in writing, your expectations.<\/strong> If you don\u2019t want them to huddle and chat in the kitchen once women begin to arrive, then tell them in advance you expect them to circulate and talk to women they don\u2019t know well. Showing what you expect is powerful and eliminates questions and assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Refuse to participate in or tolerate poor behavior.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

You may have to pull another woman to the side to lovingly discuss her behavior. Assume she wasn\u2019t aware and pray for her. You will need to stop gossip in its tracks<\/strong> \u2013 don\u2019t just ignore it – shut it down. You may have to make a phone call or write a note of apology on someone else’s behalf. Model humility and repentance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Provide opportunities for women to serve together.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Service changes the focus from \u201cme\u201d to \u201cwe\u201d.<\/strong> When women have to rely on one another to complete a task or project, they are more likely to extend kindness to their teammates. Doing something challenging together like serving in a local soup kitchen, assembling pillowcase dresses<\/a>, creating no-sew fleece blankets<\/a>, or completing random acts of kindness<\/a> creates opportunities to bond. Shared experiences create unity.<\/strong> Consider these 60 service project ideas<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Pray for unity.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

We can\u2019t change hearts, but God can.<\/strong> Spend time personally and as a team praying for God to unify your women. 2 Corinthians 13:11<\/a> is a great starting point, \u201cFinally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.\u201d You may also want to pray Colossians 3:14<\/a>, 1 Corinthians 1:10<\/a>, 1 Peter 3:8<\/a>, and Ephesians 4:1-6<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I pray God will give you discernment as you seek to create a more welcoming women\u2019s ministry.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
