{"id":9468,"date":"2018-08-21T10:00:40","date_gmt":"2018-08-21T14:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/?p=9468"},"modified":"2025-02-09T16:31:12","modified_gmt":"2025-02-09T21:31:12","slug":"how-long-should-your-speaker-speak","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/how-long-should-your-speaker-speak\/","title":{"rendered":"How long should your speaker speak?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/How-long-should-your-speaker-speak.png\" alt=\"How long should your speaker speak at your next women's ministry event?\" class=\"wp-image-9469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/How-long-should-your-speaker-speak.png 600w, https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/How-long-should-your-speaker-speak-200x300.png 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Note: This post has been updated in 2025 with new recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first questions we must ask as we plan events, is &#8220;how long should our speaker speak&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our discussion on this topic in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/womensministrytoolboxcommunity\/\">Women\u2019s Ministry Toolbox Community<\/a> (a free, closed Facebook Group for women&#8217;s ministry leaders) uncovered a wide range of suggestions and preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before to get to best practices, we need to establish this one thing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our personal preferences do not matter.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not about:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How long <strong>we think<\/strong> a speaker should speak<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Our attention span<\/strong> (or lack thereof)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s been <strong>done in the past<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So what does matter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We must give our speakers time to share the message that God has given them.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But how do we decide what that number should be?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shall we pin up a dart board? See what&#8217;s left after we plug in the rest of the schedule? Pick an even number?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Um, no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your speaker\u2019s message should be the focus of your event.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We <strong>signal the importance of the message<\/strong> to our women by allotting more time to our speaker than to anything else on our event schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We need to give our speaker\u2019s enough time to develop and deliver their message.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You may not realize that most speakers spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars each year traveling to and attending training to hone their craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At these conferences and trainings, speakers are taught how to deliver Biblical messages that your women will remember and that God can use to transform lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">There is an art to crafting a memorable, meaningful message.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>My recommendation (updated in 2025) is to schedule 30-minute speaking or teaching sessions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I used to recommend 40 minutes, professional speakers I know agree that it is becoming more and more difficult for women to sit and listen for longer than 30 minutes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Social media has, unfortunately, helped to decrease our attention span. Our brains have become used to frequent interruptions and short clips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> If your speaker is presenting an <strong>interactive workshop<\/strong>, I suggest 45-60 minutes. If a speaker has an activity that requires more time, she should let you know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you only give your speaker 20 minutes to share their message your audience is going to be short-changed.<\/strong> It may lack in depth or application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While speakers develop and deliver their message in different ways, almost all speaking sessions include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prayer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At least one personal story<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The reading of scripture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communicating a Truth through that scripture passage (teaching portion)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Application questions\/suggestions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An opportunity to respond<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The teaching portion often has one main point with 3 supporting points. While speaking styles differ, your speaker is probably going to spend 15-20 minutes walking through those points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Squeezing all of that into about 30 minutes requires a lot of prayers, preparation, and the work of the Holy Spirit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long does your speaker want to speak?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>It would be rude to assign and not discuss the length of the speaking session with your speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some speakers like to include activities or table discussions as a part of their session and may need more than 30 minutes. If you&#8217;re already planning to include discussion time after they speak, be sure you share that information with your speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We&#8217;re after depth, not breadth.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Three speakers, each speaking for 10-15 minutes at an event is equivalent to offering your women a <strong>sampler platter<\/strong>. They are just going to get a small taste of what the speaker has to offer. Instead, offer your women the opportunity to <strong>really connect with one speaker<\/strong> and include enough time that she can take them <strong>deep into God&#8217;s Word<\/strong> so they leave the event <strong>filled<\/strong>, not disappointed that there was no main course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Protect the Speaking Sessions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you communicate prior, and again at the event, the speaker\u2019s specific time slot once it has been finalized&#8230; And then do your very best to<strong> honor that time slot<\/strong> \u2013 cut a song, shorten an icebreaker game, or serve food faster to keep the event on schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It can be tempting<\/strong> to use the Holy Spirit as an <del>excuse<\/del> reason to allow the event to stretch beyond its scheduled end time but remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We are responsible for starting the event on time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We\u2019ve invited the Holy Spirit into every step of the event planning process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We need to honor our women\u2019s schedules and assume they have somewhere they need to be immediately after \u2013 many will!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We need to honor our volunteers assisting with childcare and clean-up and allow them to return home promptly.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>God\u2019s given our speakers a special message to deliver, let\u2019s set our speakers up for success!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be sure to check out these other event planning resources:<\/strong><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.teachable.com\/p\/how-to-select-and-book-a-speaker\">How to Select the Best Speaker for Your Event (Free Mini-Course)<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/save-date-cards\/\">Why Your Women Need Save-the-Date Cards<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/what-your-speaker-needs-to-know\/\">What Your Speaker Needs to Know But Might Not Think to Ask<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/questions-for-potential-speakers\/\">Questions for Potential Speakers<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/womens-ministry-binder-essentials\/\">Women\u2019s Ministry Binder Essentials<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/post-event-evaluation-form\/\">Post Event Evaluation Form (Free Printable)<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Note: This post has been updated in 2025 with new recommendations.
