Check.<\/p>\n<p>Men\u2019s ministry. Check.<\/p>\n<p>Women\u2019s ministry. Check.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve jumped through these hoops at other churches, often receiving little or no-follow up from ministry leaders. To be honest, we\u2019ve learned to keep our expectations low.<\/p>\n<p>Thank God this church was different.<\/p>\n<h5>In her warm, welcoming email she:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Let me know where I could find women\u2019s ministry news and info.<\/li>\n<li>Asked if I\u2019d like to be included in the online women\u2019s ministry communication.<\/li>\n<li>Noted that she was aware I had already signed up for the next Bible study session.<\/li>\n<li>Gracefully wove in the mission\/purpose of their women\u2019s ministry.<\/li>\n<li>Included details and an invitation to the next women\u2019s ministry event.<\/li>\n<li>Invited me to contact her with any questions I had.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I felt welcomed!<\/p>\n<h5>We know from past experiences, as a member and a guest, that it\u2019s not always easy to be a welcoming church.<\/h5>\n<p><em>Please note: Affiliate links follow.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When the opportunity arose for me to review Thom S. Rainer\u2019s newest book, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2rwljgD\" rel=\"nofollow\">Becoming a Welcoming Church<\/a>, I jumped on it!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a quick read, a smaller book with just 100 pages, which shines a bright light on real-life experiences of church guests (the good and the bad) and the blind-bias of church members and leaders.<\/p>\n<p>As Mr. Rainer succinctly states, \u201cMany church leaders and members think their churches are healthier than they really are. Many leaders and members think their churches have better ministries than they really do. And many leaders think their churches are friendlier than they really are.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5>Here\u2019s a short sampling of some of the things we\u2019ve personally encountered:<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019ve been locked out of the sanctuary during a Sunday morning service.<\/li>\n<li>Begged repeatedly for weeks on end to be added to the elusive Pastor\u2019s weekly email list.<\/li>\n<li>Were ejected from our seats at the Christmas service because we had mistakenly sat in the section for pregnant mothers and senior adults.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I could go on, but I won\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChurches perceive they are a friendly church because the members are friendly to one another. But they don\u2019t think about walking in the shoes of first-time guests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether folks are guests at your Sunday morning worship service, Bible study, or women\u2019s ministry event, we can all play a part in making certain everyone who walks through those doors has the best experience possible.<\/p>\n<p>Just as the women\u2019s ministry director did at our most recent church home, we can ensure everyone (and especially women) receives a warm welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Almost all of the advice and principles in <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2rwljgD\" rel=\"nofollow\">Becoming a Welcoming Church<\/a> can be applied to women\u2019s ministry and I want to highlight a few \u2013 with my own additions \u2013 below.<\/p>\n<h4>12 Ways Women\u2019s Ministry Teams Can Warmly Welcome Guests<\/h4>\n<p>1. <strong>Refuse to participate in holy huddles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2. When caught up in a holy huddle (it happens), <strong>remove oneself to welcome unfamiliar faces.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Sit with and near guests<\/strong>, rather than claiming the same seat or pew week after week.<\/p>\n<p>4. Visit with your visitors <strong>before service<\/strong> ever begins.<\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Be quick to supply information<\/strong> when it is requested.<\/p>\n<p>6. When a new attendee volunteers, <strong>accept their offer<\/strong> and put them to work!<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>Send a welcome email<\/strong> or note to every woman who visits. Invite them to jump into the current Bible study series and give them details about the next couple of upcoming events.<\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>Listen and ask questions.<\/strong> Sometimes we smother guests with talk about ourselves or the church. Get to know your guests. Identify their needs.<\/p>\n<p>9. <strong>Don\u2019t dismiss those who aren\u2019t new in town.<\/strong> They may not be as connected as you may assume.<\/p>\n<p>10.<strong> Issue multiple invitations<\/strong>. Don\u2019t dismiss them if they don\u2019t show at your very next event. Reach out and invite them to the next thing on the calendar. You may need to be persistent, especially if they\u2019ve been wounded at their last church.<\/p>\n<p>11.
