Discussion Group Options<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Attendees pick their own groups.<\/li>\n<li>Open (aka fluid groups) all weekend long.<\/li>\n<li>Assigned groups all weekend long.<\/li>\n<li>Assigned groups, but changing groups at every session.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>2. Pro\u2019s and Con\u2019s of Assigning Groups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In our post-retreat meeting this month our group decided we need to assign our women to discussion groups at our next retreat. We found most of our women stayed with their friends.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019ll be honest with you, we\u2019re divided within our group about whether or not the groups should stay the same all weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Some of our team feels the groups should change every session so\u00a0everyone gets to know more people.<\/p>\n<p>Others, myself included, feel that staying with the same group allows women time to open up and build trust within the group.<\/p>\n<p>The retreat I attended with another church in January had set groups for the weekend. Several women were quiet during our first group time, but were bolder in sharing by the end of the weekend. Our group was definitely closer because we\u2019d spent so much time together. I connected with women I wouldn\u2019t have otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>Your team will need to decide what is more important \u2013 building deeper relationships with a few or getting to know as many women as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Some of your women will share with everyone every time.<\/p>\n<p>Some of your women will never share.<\/p>\n<p>Some of your women need time to share.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Roommates-should-be-placed-in-different-discussion-groups.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5155\" src=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Roommates-should-be-placed-in-different-discussion-groups.png\" alt=\"Roommates should be placed in different discussion groups\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Roommates-should-be-placed-in-different-discussion-groups.png 600w, https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Roommates-should-be-placed-in-different-discussion-groups-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Roommates and Discussion Groups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We all agreed that roommates should not be placed in the same discussion groups. They\u2019ll have plenty of time together in their rooms at night and will often eat together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Ideas for assigning groups:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pray and draw names from a bag before the retreat.<\/li>\n<li>Place stickers on every program.<\/li>\n<li>Distribute different colored cups, bags, etc. Whatever color they (or you) choose at check-in determines the group they\u2019ll be in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Changing groups every session can be a bit of a logistical nightmare. I\u2019ve tried to hash out a plan on paper to ensure no one is in the same group twice. I cannot figure it out. <em>If one of you has a solution, would you please share it?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Code of Conduct<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you choose to have discussion groups, please make sure you share some kind of code of conduct. See my <a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/code-of-conduct-for-small-groups\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Code of Conduct post<\/a> for ideas. Often roommates to share details about their groups with each other without meaning to.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/everything-need-know-planning-retreat\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6569\" src=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/ad-bar-everything-you-need-to-know.png\" alt=\"ad-bar-everything-you-need-to-know\" width=\"600\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/ad-bar-everything-you-need-to-know.png 600w, https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/ad-bar-everything-you-need-to-know-300x65.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Group Size<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Set a limit on each group\u2019s size. Between 7 and 10 is usually a good number. Smaller groups make for better sharing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> <strong>Where Your Groups Should Meet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want honest, deep discussions you&#8217;ll need to place your groups in places where they feel no one else will hear what they are sharing.<\/p>\n<p>Depending upon your retreat location, you may have separate rooms you can send your groups out to. On one retreat we used a few of our own rooms &#8211; we had condos with living rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Staying at the tables in your meeting space can make it hard for women with hearing issues to hear. Background noises and voices from the surrounding tables can be a huge distraction.<\/p>\n<p>Keeping some groups in the room (but spread out) and sending other groups to nearby spaces works well.<\/p>\n<p>Just make sure you know where every group is meeting so you can\u00a0go\u00a0get them if they lose track of the time.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>What has been your experience with discussion groups at retreats?
