For four years I had the privilege of being a part of a small prayer group. Those precious ladies prayed me through my father\u2019s brief battle with brain cancer, a rocky time in our marriage, and our boys\u2019 sometimes bumpy elementary school years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Prayer groups can provide ongoing spiritual support for the women in your church.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I personally experienced this for myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many years ago I was approached by two dear women in my Sunday school class that had started praying together. Kim and Becki wanted to know if I\u2019d like to start praying with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had never been a part of a formal prayer group and didn\u2019t really know what to expect. To be honest, praying out loud was not something I was comfortable with yet. Kim and Becki assured me that I could just sit and listen and that I was welcome to join in whenever I felt comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially we met a Kim\u2019s house and prayed while her children played one morning each week during the school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first time we met I don\u2019t think I prayed a word. But they prayed over me, my children, and my marriage and I wept. We learned to keep a box of tissues handy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit in mighty and powerful ways over those 4 years. Those prayer meetings became an anchor for my soul.<\/strong> I knew whatever I was going through (and there were some really, really hard things during those 4 years)<\/em> that we would be on our knees every week taking all of our concerns to the throne room. It was a growing and humbling experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first it was just the three of us, but God began to grow our little group. We moved our prayer time to the evening so those working could attend and we moved from Kim\u2019s house to the prayer room at our church. At one point there were as many as six of us and then God shrunk us down to three before He brought an end to our time together (one\u2019s husband was diagnosed with cancer and our family got the news we were moving to KY).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now some of you may be wondering how much time we spent in prayer versus how much time we spent visiting with one another. It would have been very easy to visit more than we prayed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We learned we need to be intentional. We also learned to lovingly rein each other in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 Tips for Keeping Your Prayer Group Focused<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To keep our prayer group time focused we learned to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Establish a clear start and end time.<\/strong> We learned to pray first and chat in the parking lot after<\/strong>. When it was cold, we\u2019d visit for a bit in each other\u2019s cars with the heaters blowing!<\/li>
  2. Use a prayer guide.<\/strong> I share the one we created here!<\/a><\/em><\/li>
  3. Start each week with a scripture verse<\/strong> or section of scripture. Reading God\u2019s Word as we entered into prayer focused our thoughts and minds.<\/li>
  4. Meet on the same day of the week at the same time.<\/strong> Even if only two of us could meet (Matthew 18:20), we would still pray. Tuesday nights was our scheduled prayer time. We\u2019d meet from 7-8:30.<\/li>
  5. Watch the clock<\/strong> \u2013 generally, we spent 30 – 45 minutes sharing and writing down each other\u2019s prayer requests. That left at least 45 minutes to be in prayer.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.<\/p>Matthew 18:20<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    How to start a prayer group from scratch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
    1. Pray God would place women<\/strong> with a heart for prayer in your path<\/strong>.<\/li>
    2. Seek confirmation<\/strong> that you are to ask them.<\/li>
    3. Approach them with your vision and ask them to pray about meeting <\/strong>with you regularly for prayer.<\/li>
    4. Determine a regular meeting time and place<\/strong>.<\/li>
    5. Seek God\u2019s will for each woman you add to your group<\/strong>. Only ask those women the whole group is in agreement on.<\/li>
    6. Accept every \u201cno\u201d graciously <\/strong>and trust that God may change their circumstances and bring them into the fold at a later date and time.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Other prayer group tips<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n
      1. Be flexible.<\/strong> Children will get sick. Don\u2019t keep attendance records.<\/li>
      2. Commit to praying even if you are unable to meet in-person.<\/strong> Often women in our group would pray at in their home at the same time we were praying at church.<\/li>
      3. Hold all prayer requests in the strictest confidence<\/strong>. I was careful to shred our prayer guides when my clipboard got too full.<\/li>
      4. Do not participate in or tolerate gossip of any kind.<\/strong><\/li>
      5. Your prayer group may only last for a season. Enjoy the time you have together!<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
