{"id":14613,"date":"2024-04-10T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-10T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/?p=14613"},"modified":"2024-04-08T13:52:25","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T17:52:25","slug":"the-unseen-reasons-women-skip-ministry-events-and-how-to-address-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/the-unseen-reasons-women-skip-ministry-events-and-how-to-address-them\/","title":{"rendered":"The Unseen Reasons Women Skip Ministry Events and How to Address Them"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/The-Unseen-Reasons-Women-Skip-Ministry-Events-and-How-to-Address-Them.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/The-Unseen-Reasons-Women-Skip-Ministry-Events-and-How-to-Address-Them.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14616\" srcset=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/The-Unseen-Reasons-Women-Skip-Ministry-Events-and-How-to-Address-Them.png 600w, https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/The-Unseen-Reasons-Women-Skip-Ministry-Events-and-How-to-Address-Them-200x300.png 200w, https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/The-Unseen-Reasons-Women-Skip-Ministry-Events-and-How-to-Address-Them-400x600.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Below you&#8217;ll find the show notes for episode 83, <strong>The Unseen Reasons Women Skip Ministry Events and How to Address Them<\/strong>, from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/podcast\/\">Women&#8217;s Ministry Toolbox Podcast<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"buzzsprout-player-14829851\"><\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/www.buzzsprout.com\/1675771\/14829851-ep-83-the-unseen-reasons-women-skip-ministry-events-and-how-to-address-them.js?container_id=buzzsprout-player-14829851&#038;player=small\" type=\"text\/javascript\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:13px\">Please note: This post contains affiliate links.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Unseen Reasons Women Skip Ministry Events and How to Address Them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This series on <a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/womens-ministry-hot-topics-and-hot-takes\/\">Hot Topics and Hot Takes<\/a> continues with a look at why women aren\u2019t coming to women\u2019s ministry events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost every week I hear from leaders who are disappointed and often frustrated by the lack of interest in women\u2019s ministry events in their church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They\u2019ve worked hard to plan and publicize events, yet few commit, and even fewer show up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They struggle to find women willing to serve on their team and women to volunteer at events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most are discouraged and many are ready to throw in the towel and walk away from their calling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are desperate to pinpoint the \u201cwhy\u201d so they can do something \u2013 anything \u2013 to turn things around.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many logistical reasons keep women away such as work, childcare, and competing activities, but today I want to look at the underlying reasons our women aren\u2019t coming.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Insight from the Bible<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of years ago as I was reading through&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=acts+8&amp;version=HCSB\">Acts 8<\/a> I couldn\u2019t help but notice the stories of Simon and the Eunuch and draw parallels to the very women we serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Simon and the Eunuch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"1\">\n<li>Heard the Gospel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saw\/understood the miracles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gave a profession of faith in Christ<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Were baptized<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The Eunuch was born again, but Simon did not truly know Jesus as Lord and Savior. Acts 8:21 tells us his heart was not right before God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of your women, have likely heard the Gospel, understood the miracles (Jesus\u2019 resurrection), have given a profession of faith, and have been baptized. But like Simon,&nbsp;<strong>some have a heart that is not right before God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of your women aren\u2019t interested in women\u2019s ministry events and activities because they have never fully accepted Christ as their Savior. (See&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=titus+1%3A16&amp;version=HCSB\">Titus 1:16<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=matthew+15%3A8&amp;version=HCSB\">Matthew 15:8<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sometimes we can see that God is not a priority or force of change in their life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quoting a date, time, and place does not equal salvation. Some prayed out of a sense of duty, succumbed to peer pressure, or came forward without a repentant heart. They may never have experienced the prick of conviction or the draw of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your women may profess to know God, but may not really know Him at all.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>I say this with confidence because&nbsp;<strong>I was one of these women<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout my teens and most of my 20\u2019s I thought I knew who God was. I grew up reciting the Apostle\u2019s Creed, but it wasn\u2019t heart knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I was lacking that personal experience with God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Bible is clear that only God knows the heart (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Samuel+16%3A7&amp;version=ESV\">1 Samuel 16:7<\/a>), we can look for the fruit of a personal relationship with God. (Click the link to access the free resource.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s examine the spiritual barriers that keep our women from women\u2019s ministry events and formulate a plan to overcome those barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7 Spiritual Barriers that Keep Our Women from Women\u2019s Ministry Events<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>1. <strong>They lack a personal relationship with God\/Christ.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They may have the head knowledge but <strong>don\u2019t have the heart knowledge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. They\u2019ve walked away from Christ. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They <em>used <\/em>to love Him, <em>used<\/em> to think about Him constantly, and <em>used<\/em> to spend time with Him almost daily but not anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. They embrace a part-time Savior. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it\u2019s convenient, when they are convicted, and when they are in crisis, then they seek His help. They may attend church every couple of Sunday mornings, but there\u2019s no active relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. An idol has taken Christ\u2019s place in their life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something or someone \u2013 could be exercise, caring for their children, an aging parent, a job, or social media \u2013 has overtaken the time they once spent with Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Their calendars have little to no space for God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They hold high the banner of busyness and don\u2019t trust God with their calendar or clock. God has the power to expand time and increase our energy so we can get everything needed complete if we ask. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our women have succumbed to the pull of society to overschedule their lives and their children\u2019s lives because they are afraid of missing out. Not realizing that they are truly missing out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. They do not know what the Word says.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They do not know or understand what scripture teaches about being in community with other believers, serving others, and engaging in discipleship. They may never have been taught about the importance of holy habits. (For more information on developing holy habits see my book, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3vQe3RC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Rethinking Fellowship<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7. They have quenched the Holy Spirit.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ve dialed down their time with God and they\u2019ve turned up the volume on the things of this world. Because they aren\u2019t spending time in prayer and time in God\u2019s Word, they struggle to know what is True and fail to follow the Lord\u2019s leading. Some have physically quenched the Holy Spirit with drugs, alcohol, and other addictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the faces of your women come to mind, you may be able to pinpoint the barriers keeping some of your women away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that we\u2019ve identified the issues,&nbsp;<strong>how do we get our women to a place where they want Jesus more<\/strong>&nbsp;than they want the very thing(s) that have taken His place?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9 Tips for Overcoming Spiritual Barriers That Prevent Women from Attending Women&#8217;s Ministry Events<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. We must pray with urgency and fervency.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lives literally hang in the balance.<\/strong> We\u2019ve got to pray for the softening of hearts, scales to be removed, ears to hear, and people to proclaim God\u2019s Truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. We must be winsome.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve got to be intentional about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/build-community-among-women\/\">creating community<\/a>&nbsp;and making certain every single woman feels&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/12-ways-womens-ministry-teams-can-warmly-welcome-guests\/\">welcome<\/a>&nbsp;so she wants to come back. The women leading your events need to be excited about the event and filled with Jesus. Delivery matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. We need to meet their physical needs so they can be present to have their spiritual needs met.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may mean offering <a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/coordinating-childcare-for-bible-study-and-womens-ministry-events\/\">childcare<\/a>, scheduling evening events for working women, and respecting their time so they can return home as scheduled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. We teach them what God\u2019s Word says and we make it easy for them to take action.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Provide workshops on how to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolboxshop.com\/collections\/ebooks\/products\/read-bible-study-for-groups-ebooks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">read the Bible<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolboxshop.com\/products\/sharing-stories-of-gods-everyday-faithfulness-workshop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how to pray<\/a>, and how to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolboxshop.com\/collections\/ebooks\/products\/prayer-warrior-boot-camp-for-groups\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">share your faith<\/a>. Give them lots of opportunities to serve others. Offer in-depth Bible studies with an emphasis on application. Help them to form or find discipling relationships with other women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. We model the very things we long to see from our women.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We show up every Sunday possible. We bring our physical Bibles and take notes during the sermon. We participate in a weekly Bible study, small groups, or <a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/defining-discipleship\/\">discipleship groups<\/a>. We share scripture on social media. We let our women see us living out our faith and the joy that it brings!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. We teach our women to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/teach-your-women-to-be-discerning\/\">be discerning<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the things our women are reading and listening to don\u2019t align with God\u2019s Word, but they have been led to believe it does. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few weeks ago I saw a post from a very popular Instagram account offering to mail out The Book of Mormon to her followers. The comments clearly revealed that many people do not understand that Mormonism is not Christianity. She was boldly sharing her beliefs and twisting scripture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>False teachings are whispering in the ears of our women constantly \u2013 are we batting those lies back with the Truth?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: There are many great resources to help you understand the difference between Christianity and Mormonism. The article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gotquestions.org\/Mormons-Christians.html\"><em>Are Mormons Christians?<\/em>, at Gotquestions.org <\/a>is a good place to start. You may also find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLLvfK83TeHUvPxeexjpHwOUCwDnWA0tEm\">this video series <\/a>by Melissa Dougherty helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7. Pour into a small group of women.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This might be your women\u2019s ministry team or a smaller discipleship group. Gather women who are interested but in need of some spiritual spurring. Study and discuss the Bible together. Most of our women struggle to talk about the Bible and what God\u2019s doing in their lives because they lack practice. <em>(My <a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/read-bible-study-for-groups\/\">READ Bible study Kit for Groups<\/a>\u00a0is perfect for this!)<\/em> Help them become strong in the holy habits of Bible study, prayer, and evangelism, and then send them out to train and encourage others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8. We must give women an opportunity to respond to the Gospel.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can talk about Christ and what it\u2019s like to live a Christ-focused life until you\u2019re blue in the face, but if you haven\u2019t told women HOW to become a follower of Christ it\u2019s all for naught!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t fall for Satan\u2019s lies that women aren\u2019t ready to hear <\/strong>\u2013 they may not be ready to respond \u2013 but they expect to hear about God when they are at a church event or they wouldn\u2019t be there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Women are more open to spiritual conversations than we give them credit for \u2013 we allow our fear of failure to keep us from sharing the best news there is!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10. Provide\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/the-solution-to-your-retreat-planning-struggles\/\">retreats<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we are able to get women to step away from the pulls of the world and set aside their crazy schedules, we can teach them to pause, to listen, and to receive a message from God. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bless them with some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/free-time-ideas-for-your-retreat\/\">free time<\/a>\u00a0so they can reflect on the message. Throw in some laughter and some fun, but <strong>don\u2019t neglect the depth<\/strong>. Allow them to connect with other women in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/retreat-discussion-groups\/\">discussion groups<\/a>. Encourage groups to continue meeting after the retreat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unfortunately, there isn\u2019t a one-size-fits-all solution to increasing attendance at our women\u2019s ministry events, but\u00a0<strong>we can make changes that encourage attendance.<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Today\u2019s Toolbox Tasks:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As a team <strong>identify the spiritual barriers keeping your women from coming<\/strong> to women\u2019s ministry events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Select and implement at least one tip<\/strong> to overcome those barriers.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Lord, we ask you to move in the hearts of our women. Give them a desire to know You more. Develop a hunger in their hearts for time with You and time with their sisters in Christ. Only You can change their hearts, but help us to do our part to make our women\u2019s ministry program a place where they grow in their love for You and Your Word.
