I have attended churches that gave out a gift to every woman in attendance, I\u2019ve helped plan women\u2019s ministry events centered around Mother\u2019s Day, but I\u2019ve also attended churches that have chosen not to host a Mother\u2019s Day event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I thought it best to do a little research on the history of Mother\u2019s Day. I admit, I expected to find secular roots that connected to greeting card and floral companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the history of Mother\u2019s Day?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/holidays\/mothers-day\">History.com<\/a> \u201cCelebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honor of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother\u2019s Day is the early Christian festival known as \u2018Mothering Sunday.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once a major tradition in the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, this celebration fell on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return to their \u201cmother church\u201d\u2014the main church in the vicinity of their home\u2014for a special service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time the Mothering Sunday tradition shifted into a more secular holiday, and children would present their mothers with flowers and other tokens of appreciation. This custom eventually faded in popularity before merging with the American Mother\u2019s Day in the 1930s and 1940s.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there is a connection to Christianity, it\u2019s not one that we traditionally associate with Mother\u2019s Day here in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">That brings me to ask, does hosting an event or activity focused on Mother\u2019s Day line up with your <a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/womens-ministry-mission-statement\/\">women\u2019s ministry mission statement<\/a>? <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Is there a clear and easy answer or are you forcing a connection? Is there another ministry in your church, perhaps your children\u2019s ministry, that should be hosting a Mother\u2019s Day event, if you\u2019re going to have one, instead?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m always thinking in terms of good, better, best. Is this the best use of your resources and time? Is this the best way to serve and support the women in your church? I can\u2019t answer those questions, only you can, but <strong>I hope to present some points in this post for your team to discuss.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here are 5 potential problems with Mother\u2019s Day events:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Not all of our women are mothers.<\/strong> Yes, I&#8217;ve heard the argument that everyone has a mother, &nbsp;not everyone has had a positive maternal influence in their life. The mere thought of honoring their mother would keep them away from your event.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>There are women in your church who are desperate to be mothers.<\/strong> From infertility to singleness, to miscarriage, to a spouse with no desire for a family, there are women in your church for whom the very thought of motherhood is unbelievably painful.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You may be rubbing salt in the wounds of a difficult mother\/child relationship. <\/strong>Consider the stepmom, the mother whose children have been taken from her. The mother who is or was physically, emotionally, or mentally abusive. Mothers of special needs children who will never have an empty nest. Mothers who aborted their child.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Many events are marketed as &#8220;Mother\/Daughter&#8221; events.<\/strong> As a mom of two boys, I can tell you, this leaves me feeling overlooked.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>We&#8217;re all &#8220;spiritual mothers&#8221;.<\/strong> Well, yes, there is a goal of every woman discipling someone spiritually younger, most churches are struggling to find women willing to disciple or mentor others.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider all of the women in your church who feel overlooked on Mother\u2019s Day. Everywhere they turn for weeks leading up to the day they are reminded of the women for whom Mother\u2019s Day is a celebration. <em>What are we to do with that?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a leader to do? <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at scripture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What does the Bible say:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Biblically there&#8217;s <strong>no mandate<\/strong> to hold a Mother&#8217;s Day event.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deuteronomy 5:16 and Ephesians 6:2 command us to <strong>honor our mothers and fathers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>woman\u2019s value<\/strong> in the eyes of God is <strong>not dependent on having children<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What should your women\u2019s ministry team do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every church situation is unique. What works one year may not work the next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me throw out some ideas for you to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 Options for Women&#8217;s Ministry and Mother&#8217;s Day<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As I see it, you&#8217;ve got basically three choices. T<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. <strong>You can host a Mother&#8217;s Day event.<\/strong> Just take into consideration, please, the things that we have talked about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for ideas or <a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/icebreakers-games\/\">icebreaker games<\/a> for your Mother&#8217;s Day event, you&#8217;ll find many on the this  website. As a matter of fact, if you&#8217;re thinking of hosting a table event or a tea, you&#8217;ll find lots of tips on the <a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/how-to-host-a-tea\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. <strong>Don&#8217;t  host a women&#8217;s ministry event at all in the month of May.<\/strong> As you look at your church calendar and your school calendars and consider everyone&#8217;s schedules, maybe, may, it&#8217;s full enough between Mother&#8217;s Day, graduations, and school, possibly getting out depending on the area where you live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. <strong>Host an event, but don&#8217;t connect it to Mother&#8217;s Day. <\/strong>For example, this year, our women&#8217;s ministry team has decided that we&#8217;re going to attend a workshop that&#8217;s being hosted at another church in our town. That&#8217;s on biblical theology, and it&#8217;ll be tracing themes through scripture from Genesis through revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s going to be a very equipping and encouraging event. We&#8217;ve bought a group of tickets so that our women can go together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mother&#8217;s Day Sacred Cows<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in a church where the <a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/how-to-host-a-tea\/\">Mother\u2019s Day Tea<\/a> has become a sacred cow, that\u2019s a little trickier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019d strongly suggest <strong>having a conversation <\/strong>with the <strong>pastor who oversees<\/strong> the women\u2019s ministry program to come up with the<strong> best way forward for your church<\/strong>. That might mean pressing pause for a year and then reassessing the need. It could mean you host the event, but you change the focus. Your Children\u2019s Director may want to take over this event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: You&#8217;ll find more information and help in tackling sacred cows in my book, <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/4a7w8Jn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Women&#8217;s Ministry Essentials: How to Build and Sustain a Thriving Christian Community. <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mother&#8217;s Day Recognition During the Service<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some churches go all out on Mother\u2019s Day and recognize the oldest mother, the youngest mother, the mother with the most children, and the grandmother with the most grandchildren with applause or gifts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I know the intention is never to cause pain, <strong>it can help your church staff to hear what women who struggle with Mother\u2019s Day think and feel about this practice.<\/strong> Could there be a better way to honor these mothers that minimize the potential of hurting some of the women in your church?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I\u2019m not saying silence is the answer either.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The church we attend has wished mothers a Happy Mother\u2019s Day from the pulpit, but they also verbally acknowledge that this is a hard day for many women and men. Both of those thoughts were reflected in the prayer that was shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Today\u2019s Toolbox Tasks:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your women\u2019s ministry usually plans a Mother\u2019s Day event or activity <strong>discuss if it\u2019s the best thing for the women in your church.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If needed, <strong>brainstorm ways you can honor the mothers in your church while also honoring those who struggle with Mother\u2019s Day.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what I hope you\u2019ll remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Not every woman in your church is a mother.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compassion is key to Mother\u2019s Day celebrations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be sensitive and consider those for whom Mother\u2019s Day is difficult.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make certain every woman knows that she is complete and is valued by God, whether or not she is a mother.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I pray God will give your team wisdom and discernment to know how best to proceed or not proceed with Mother\u2019s Day events or activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You may also want to explore:<\/strong><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/womens-ministry-mothers-day-ideas\/\">Women\u2019s Ministry Mother\u2019s Day Ideas<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/mothers-day-left-right-story\/\">Mother\u2019s Day Left Right Story<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/mothers-day-game\/\">Mother\u2019s Day Game: Pass the Package<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/gift-of-no-dishes-valentines-and-mothers-day-versions\/\">The Gift of No Dishes: Mother\u2019s Day Version<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/how-to-host-a-tea\/\">How to Host a Women&#8217;s Ministry Tea<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/table-event-hostess\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Table Event: Hostess Responsibilities<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/table-event-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Table Event: Planning Teams<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/table-planning-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Table Event: Planning Timeline<\/a><br><a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.teachable.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Women\u2019s Ministry Event Planning Course<\/a><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Below you&#8217;ll find the show notes for episode 81, Mother&#8217;s Day and Women&#8217;s Ministry: Navigating Challenges with Compassion and Sensitivity, from the&nbsp;Women&#8217;s Ministry Toolbox Podcast.
