I\u2019ll be sharing<strong> my process for using a closed Facebook group and Instagram for women\u2019s ministry.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I was invited to join our church\u2019s women\u2019s ministry team during covid. We were looking for ways to connect with our women. While there was a closed Facebook group already in place, we made some purposeful changes and created a strategy for using it going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The first thing we did was decide what the purpose of our Facebook group would be.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-e6763003\">Here\u2019s what you can find in our Facebook group\u2019s description:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This group has been created by [our church name] Women\u2019s Ministry Team.<br>Women who are active attendees of [our church name] are invited to join.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purpose of this group is to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Promote the events and activities of [our ministry name]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support the mission, purpose, and vision of [our church name]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create a space for conversation and connection when we are unable to meet together<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Promote community<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage spiritual growth<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hebrews 10:24-25, \u201cAnd let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Members are expected to follow the group guidelines that have been put in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Note: All of the above is written in our Facebook group description.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-a31e85f1\">We utilize the membership questions to screen people who want to join the group. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We ask just two questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is your connection with [our church name]?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will you abide by the group rules? <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-003c4a29\">Facebook provides a sample of rules for your group to get you started.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Our group rules include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be kind and respectful<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Respect everyone\u2019s privacy (no screenshots, no sharing information without permission)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No promotions or spam (we clarify that this includes jewelry parties and posting about your business)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No unsolicited direct messages via Messenger<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No videos, lives, or watch parties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We reserve the right to delete posts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Membership questions and group rules help protect our group from spammers, but that doesn\u2019t mean every woman that joins your Facebook group will remember to follow the rules. <\/strong>Mistakes happen and we want to show grace when we can, but we also need to enforce the guidelines we\u2019ve put in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Decide in advance how you\u2019ll deal with infractions.<\/strong> Facebook makes it easy to delete posts and remind people of the rule they violated. <strong>It\u2019s always best to include a personal message<\/strong> that is seasoned heavily with grace. People can get very upset when their post is removed,<em> even if you think it\u2019s clearly covered in the group rules<\/em>. If that happens, you may decide it\u2019s best to put that specific member on moderation so each of their posts must be approved. We do not have post-approval set for every post, but I would use it for individual people if the need arose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moderators can be great for helping to moderate the posts. The admins (myself and our women&#8217;s ministry director) are responsible for approving new members and monitoring posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I serve as our <a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolbox.com\/8-benefits-of-a-social-media-coordinator\/\">social media coordinator<\/a>, though, I don\u2019t know if the title is in writing anywhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I schedule about 3 posts every week to encourage conversation, connection, and spiritual growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-3f4c9a91\">What to post:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned in the last podcast episode,<strong> I primarily use a mix of spiritual icebreaker questions, Bible verses, general icebreaker questions, and inspirational quotes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What did you learn from this week\u2019s sermon?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A bible verse related to our ministry focus or the current sermon series<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What\u2019s your favorite flavor of ice cream?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When we are intentional about what we post, we can encourage spiritual disciplines like prayer, regularly engaging with God\u2019s Word, fasting, and serving others.<\/strong> We\u2019ve done a scripture memory challenge and another month we did a scripture reading challenge. I shared some Random Acts of Kindness at Christmas and got feedback from our women that they\u2019d like to do more of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-3f65774d\">Thoughts on inspirational quotes:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I developed a rule for my Women\u2019s Ministry Toolbox social media channels that I refer to as \u201cI only quote dead people.\u201d Between Christian leaders, speakers, and authors deconstructing and changing their views on biblical issues,<strong> I decided it was best to quote people whose views can\u2019t change<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I typically pull quotes from well-known biblical scholars and founders of the faith. I try to select people that most would categorize as conservative or holding a historical, biblical worldview. I\u2019m not trying to stir the pot with controversial quotes and people. I want to cultivate unity not sow division. Your pastor may be able to provide a list of sound men and women that you can quote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Any person you quote, whether you intend to or not, you are placing a seal of approval on them. <\/strong>Your women might purchase any book they\u2019ve written. Your women will assume that person is solid and can be trusted \u2013 so make certain they are. Dig beyond \u201cthey call themselves a Christian\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If you get pushback, please don\u2019t dismiss it.<\/em> It is not easy to approach a leader with a concern about a person or resource they have shared. Hear them out. Find out what their concerns are and do some research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I rarely share posts I\u2019ve found on Facebook in our Facebook group or our Instagram stories. Many of them fall in line with my only quoting dead people rule, but I\u2019ve also found a lot of \u201cChristians\u201d share things that aren\u2019t biblical \u2013 whether it\u2019s the source, the person, or the content that\u2019s an issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-2c6060dc\">I strongly encourage you to <strong>search before you share.<\/strong> <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Is that quote from that person? Who is that person? What does that person believe? What book is that from? Is that a book that aligns with what our church teaches?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-6460ca4d\">I don\u2019t often post about current events, it\u2019s not the purpose of either of our social media accounts. <\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>While I certainly hope our women will pray for people suffering from the latest hurricane, war, shooting, or crisis, you can\u2019t cover it all. We often don\u2019t know for days or weeks what actually happened. Fake news is everywhere and it\u2019s hard to know what\u2019s true or what information isn\u2019t being reported. <strong>When it comes to current events, please pause and pray before you post.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"fd-form-6059e110e8b3a8666bd6196f\"><\/div>\n<script>\n  window.fd('form', {\n    formId: '6059e110e8b3a8666bd6196f',\n    containerEl: '#fd-form-6059e110e8b3a8666bd6196f'\n  });\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-55cb7add\">How to create posts:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If I\u2019m not sharing other people\u2019s posts, then I\u2019ve got to create my own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I use <a href=\"http:\/\/partner.canva.com\/OrBQqN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Canva<\/a> to create my graphics. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I typically use square (1080 x1080 px), but you can also use 1080 x 1350 \u2013 you want to take up as much space on their phone as you can \u2013 so if you don\u2019t go square, go vertical. Unless you\u2019re posting on YouTube or your church\u2019s website, you\u2019ll want any videos to be vertical too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/partner.canva.com\/OrBQqN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Canva<\/a> has default sizes you can use that make it easy. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I prefer to download graphics in a PNG format as the text on a JPG sometimes blurs. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You don\u2019t have to create a graphic for every post, I just find they help grab the attention of our women as they scroll. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As I mentioned in a previous episode, your church may have a Canva account \u2013 ask if you can use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-ee9ac183\">How to post:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I like to use the scheduling feature (inside Facebook) to load my Facebook posts once a month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I tend to place the same type of post on the same day of the week.<\/strong> Currently, I\u2019m posting M, W, and F but I have done Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Figure out a system that works for you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I create custom posts for our church, <strong>I rely heavily on the social media kits I\u2019ve created and sell<\/strong> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/womensministrytoolboxshop.com\/collections\/social-media-kits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored nofollow\">Women\u2019s Ministry Toolbox Shop<\/a>. Creating posts and coming up with content can be super time-consuming. Let me help!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-3a92e6b0\">Analytics and Algorithms (who sees what you post):<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Not everyone is going to see every post.<\/strong> The algorithms on social media are not your friend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When there\u2019s an important post, I send a message to the rest of the women\u2019s ministry team and ask them to comment and like it to boost the number of eyes that might see it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look at your analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have about 230 or so women in our Facebook group. On a typical post, only about 40 of them see it. That\u2019s it. That\u2019s one of the reasons I encourage leaders to <strong>use social media as a reminder<\/strong>, <strong>not the main communication method,<\/strong> for their ministry events and activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-189b7137\">Account Access<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re setting up new accounts, please make sure you <strong>give multiple people access<\/strong> \u2013 you don\u2019t want to wake up one day and find out you\u2019ve lost the ability to access your group. If it hasn\u2019t happened yet, Instagram is working on allowing multiple people access to an account without having to share the password. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Facebook allows for multiple admins and moderators. Admins have access to more controls so pick those people wisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-79242766\">Instagram<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Instagram account is a work in progress. I\u2019m still trying to figure out how to schedule posts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating and sharing reels of our women\u2019s ministry event has been fun to do and sharing our church\u2019s posts in stories has been beneficial too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We know we reach younger women through Instagram and it gives us a window into their lives when we follow them back.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading advgb-dyn-5efd98f9\">Want to learn more?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to <strong>take your social media skills to the next level<\/strong>, I\u2019d start by following someone who teaches how to use the app you want to master.
