Corinne, thank you for your comment and question. I was speaking about women’s ministry as a whole. Yes, I would continue to encourage women’s ministry teams to provide something (more than one thing, preferably) during the summer months. To offer nothing for women from early May to September is too long of a break.

Summer events and meetings don’t have to be a lot of work. Some women’s ministry teams offer a summer Bible study, some book club meetings, some offer special fellowship opportunities, and others have summer classes. This summer I met several women during our summer classes that I never crossed paths with before.

As for burnout – I think there are better solutions than canceling all events and activities for several months. Maybe your team needs more volunteers, maybe your events need to be less elaborate, and maybe a team planning retreat would take less stress off the rest of the year.

Since you mentioned that you are a small group leader, I do think it’s appropriate for small groups to take a summer break. Maybe someone else could lead a summer study or organize summer fellowship opportunities.

I hope that helps you to understand where I’m coming from. – Cyndee

Now that life has resumed, we seem to appreciate the break. I think people do after all need a pause to think on their own to see what comes up for themselves. After having the summer off, I think we are better off for it. Times are changing. Would you say you feel the same way now that the pandemic is over? The problem addressed by taking breaks is the reduction of burnout. What do you do to combat it if you take away the break as one of the potential solutions to it?

You have truly helped us a lot! I teach a mom‘s Bible study during the year. In the summer we meet 2-3 times for a picnic at the park with the kiddos. ALso once or twice for a barbecue with the husbands and the kiddos.
